Several of the Riviera’s sights and museums feature prehistoric remains, including the remarkable Bronze Age petroglyphs in the upper glacial valleys (Vallée des Merveilles, Terra Amata in Nice…).

 
 

Ancient Greek and Roman civilization is also well represented, providing excellent reasons to visit and explore the Riviera.

Vallée des Merveilles

Nearly 2,800 metres above sea level, this mountain site of exceptional beauty boasts an archaeological treasure of over 30,000 rock carvings.

Augustus’ Trophy at La Turbie
Overlooking the coast just above the Principality of Monaco, this monument celebrates the Pax Romana and Augustus’ victory over the Alpine tribes (6 BC).

   

Amphitheatre & Baths of Cimiez
Near the gardens of Cimiez and in the Roman town of Cemelenum, the ruins of the ancient Baths and the museum commemorate the glorious past of Nice.
