 Grasse, the birthplace of the perfume industry
The perfume industry in Grasse is a direct descendant of the tannery industry, which prospered here in the Middle Ages. Tanners then evolved into glove-makers/perfumers thanks to a micro-climate conducive to growing plants for perfumes. By the 18th century they had become exclusively perfumers, making Grasse the world capital of the perfume industry.
